Antarctica Systems pioneers data visualization for enterprise applications
Visual Net Enterprise provides unique tool for information "search and discovery"

Vancouver, BC - June 18, 2001 -- Antarctica Systems Inc. (ASI), a provider of revolutionary information visualization technology, today announced the availability of Visual Net Enterprise (VNE). Visual Net Enterprise gives users an intuitive, efficient, and graphical "search and discovery" tool to organize, browse, and view large amounts of data in multiple databases and media formats.
Visual Net Enterprise transforms enterprise information into large-scale data maps, and provides a superior navigation interface featuring context-rich visuals. VNE uses Antarctica's breakthrough visual mapping technology to show relevant and related data as defined by the customer. VNE's design is based on the premise that more information can be communicated and absorbed using a multi-dimensional visual representation, as opposed to one-dimensional text.
"Knowledge is the number one competitive advantage in business, yet corporations are inundated with so much data from so many sources and in so many formats, users can't find and use the critical information," said Tim Bray, Founder and CEO of Antarctica. "Visual Net Enterprise uses time-proven mapping techniques and a visual representation of data to raise the search, discovery, and access of information to a new level."

Visual mapping of data enables users to go from merely searching for information to strategizing and organizing data. Users browse through categories of data laid out on a map to quickly understand the types of data available to them. At the same time, they get information about the most relevant data in a visual representation. This one-two punch enables users to quickly see all pertinent data and determine what information best serves their needs.

"Our audience is made up of venture capitalists who consistently invest in state-of-the-art technology, and we believe that we must make use of the newest, best-of-breed technology whenever possible. Visual Net is the trendsetter when it comes to easy, quick access to valuable information," said Mary Macdonald, President of Macdonald & Associates, the leading source of information on venture capital activity in Canada. "Antarctica is helping Macdonald & Associates bring out the true quality and richness of our unparalleled proprietary database to our customers and potential customers."

Visual Net for Enterprise Features
VNE's visual mapping places data onto a powerful knowledge management and navigation interface, helping users get the information they need to do their job easier, faster, and more effectively. Visual Net offers:

  • Navigation across multiple data sources in a variety of formats;
  • Fully internationalized language capability for multilingual facilities;
  • A completely customizable data display, with all maps and visual icons set according to each facility's parameters;
  • Remarkable scalability, enabling support for huge data sets with continual room for expansion; and
  • Easy updating to reflect changes in enterprise resources or usage.

Visual Net Platform
The Visual Net platform is the technical foundation for all ASI's visual mapping products. This patent pending visualization solution works with any information network composed of hierarchically organized categories and data objects. Visual Net takes all category/object attributes, and supplements this data with metadata collected by ASI's proprietary robot module. Based on all these attributes, the backend subsystem gives each category/object pairing a graphic representation and a unique X and Z location on a two-dimensional map.

Visual Net can be utilized in a wide range of applications such as research libraries, corporate Intranets, eCommerce and retail cataloging, and general advanced "search and explore" of large amounts of data. Visual Net is offered as a standalone application or as part of custom applications provided directly or through ASI's partner channel. Visual Net Enterprise and Visual Net for Libraries, launched April 2001, are available immediately. Pricing varies based on application.
